Asda has sponsored a garden – and won a gold medal – at this year’s most famous gardening event

The famous <a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-chelsea-flower-show" target="_blank">RHS Chelsea Flower Show</a> is well underway and this year, Asda are proud to be sponsoring their very own garden, which has <a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-chelsea-flower-show/Gardens/2016/The-Garden-Bed-%E2%80%93-a-partnership-with-Asda" target="_blank">won a gold medal</a> at the prestigious show. The project, called ‘The Garden Bed&rsquo;, features an innovative design that aims to replicate the experience of being in a hospice garden. With the main focus of the garden being a bed covered in a woven ‘quilt&rsquo; of flowers and foliage, the project invites visitors to experience being in the garden through the eyes of hospice patients.Created by lifelong friends Alison Doxey, an English Master Florist and RHS Chelsea 2013 medal winner, and Stephen Welch, a chartered landscape architect with a Masters in Landscape Design, the garden is simple and homely, full to the brim with bulbs, perennials, shrubs and trees. Finally, in order to create a safe, secluded and private space, the garden is enclosed by a clipped Yew hedge, as shown in the design below:<img alt="the-garden-bed-design-from-above" class="ci-image ci-original" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/the-garden-bed-design_GL?scl=1">The unusual theme for the garden was inspired by an actual real life garden that Stephen designed for Les Bourgs Hospice in Guernsey, in which resident&rsquo;s beds could actually be taken into the garden for respite. Seeing the difference that this sanctuary made to the wellbeing and happiness of patients and their families alike inspired Stephen to bring his idea to a larger audience. As Stephen said of the project: “There comes a time when many of us face the challenge of our loved ones needing hospice care. These gardens are somewhere for patients, friends and families to spend time together, a beautiful restful sanctuary. The garden delivers a unique sensory space in which lines are blurred between the outside and inside, this connection with nature is both invigorating and calming, stimulating our natural healing process.”<img alt="the-garden-bed-design" class="ci-image ci-original" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/the-garden-bed-design_GL?scl=1">While the main aim of the innovative project is to illustrate how easily a bed can be manoeuvred from a hospice room to a garden, the idea is that hopefully the garden&rsquo;s message will inspire more hospices to offer respite gardens in future.Andrew Moore, Chief Merchandising Officer at Asda, said: “Asda is absolutely thrilled to be sponsoring 'The Garden Bed' at The Chelsea Flower Show this year.
