From savoury to sweet, who knew cereal could be so versatile

<p>It's safe to say that most of us have a box of cereal in the cupboard, but did you ever think it could be used in other ways than just with milk in a bowl? <br><br>Cereal is a great carbohydrate source and also a brilliant ingredient to use when bulking up meals both savoury and sweet.</p><p>The below cereal recipe ideas will have your mind blown, and are particularly useful for making the most of those leftover bits at the end of the bag. <br> </p><h2>POP-CORN-STYLE CHICKEN FINGERS</h2><p>This will quickly become a favorite and added to your weekly cooking repertoire. It&rsquo;s a healthier,  baked version of the deep-fried crispy chicken that teenagers are especially fond of!</p><p>Dust a packet of Butchers Selection chicken breast strips with plain flour then dip in some beaten egg and then in Asda Rice Snaps. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and drizzle with a little olive oil before baking at 200C/180Fan/Gas 6 for approx 10-12 minutes until crisp, golden and cooked through. Serve with wedges and crisp green salad.</p><h2><br>kids LUNCH CHEESEY BITES</h2><p>Ideal for kids lunches, these tasty bites also make perfect finger food for toddlers. Mix soft cheese with some grated Cheddar cheese and chopped fresh chives or parsley. Lightly crush cereal such as Rice snaps or Malt Wheats. With wet hands (to prevent sticking), roll the cheese into walnut-sized balls then roll in the crushed cereal. If liked place on cocktail sticks with cubes of fresh pineapple of wedges of apple.</p><h2><br>GARLICY BAKED RATATOUILLE</h2><p>It&rsquo;s possible to add a delicious crispy cereal topping to contrast a variety of stews or pies . Whether it&rsquo;s a veggie stew, a mince sauce - Bolognese or chilli con carne style &ndash; or a fish or chicken pie base, cereal makes a super-easy, extra tasty, crunchy topping that will help you avoid peeling potatoes or rolling out pastry. </p><p>Make a chunky ratatouille by chopping onions, peppers, courgettes and aubergines and place in an ovenproof dish with chopped canned tomatoes. Cover with foil and bake at 200C/180 Fan/Gas 6 for approx. 25-30 minutes until veg are tender. Alternatively cook in a large saucepan and then transfer to an ovenproof dish. Scatter cereal such as Asda Flakes or Malt Wheats over the top. Melt some garlic butter and drizzle or brush over the cereal. Return to the oven and bake for 5 minutes until crisp and hot. Serve with a salad.</p><h2><br>VERY BERRY FRUIT LAYER</h2><p>Delicious layers of crunchy cereal combined with tangy red berries and sweet fruit yoghurt is ideal for  making in pots to have on the go at work or to pep up the kids packed lunch. Save a few used yoghurt pots to clean out and re-use for transportation. Alternatively these mouthwatering puds will make an attractive after dinner dessert that&rsquo;s perfectly healthy!</p><p>Layer your chosen cereal… Asda Frosted flakes, choco snaps or choco squares (lightly crushed to fit into pots) or granola with frozen summer berries, thawed and low-fat natural yoghurt or fruit flavoured yoghurt like cherry or raspberry. For a treat why not try swapping yoghurt for custard…yum!</p><h2>CRUNCHY FRUIT CRUMBLE</h2><p>Adding flavour- packed cereal to sweet dishes is a good shout! Cereal also gives a great texture as well as being tasty and it couldn&rsquo;t be easier to simply grab a handful to scatter over fruits like bananas, plums or peaches before baking and serving with yoghurt or crème fraiche or using as the base for a quick trifle, topped with fruit, custard and cream. Try adding cereal to a crumble topping before spreading over juicy, part-cooked fruits (apples, berries, bananas) and baking.</p>
