Going Out With Baby in Winter

We’ve got weather-proof tips and tricks to keep you and baby cosy and calm on your first trips out together

It can be tricky getting out of the house with a newborn, what with the baby bag to pack and the prospect of navigating public transport with a pram. That challenge can feel multiplied during cold weather, when there’s rain, wind and sometimes snow to contend with.

If you’re worrying about taking baby out in winter and wondering whether it’s worth it – it is!

Why it’s good to get out

It’s tempting to hunker down indoors when the temperature dips – after all, it’s enough to think about keeping baby clean, fed, and comforted without cold weather to contend with. However, if the temperature hasn’t dropped below zero, both you and baby will benefit from fresh air.

Not only is it an antidote to cabin fever (there’s only so much time you can spend on the sofa before boredom kicks in), but it’ll prevent you feeling isolated and give your day a sense of structure. There are plenty of benefits for baby, too. Daylight helps with their circadian and sleep rhythms, (cue fewer crying wake-up calls for you) and they’ll be stimulated by all those new sounds and smells.

Layers are your best friend

It’s important to prep properly as babies lack the ability to regulate their body temperature and lose heat much more quickly than we do, but equally, they can get too hot if you overdress them. That’s where light layers come in. While a snowsuit is a stellar option for seriously chilly weather, it’s layers that’ll save the day.

Start with a snug bodysuit as their bottom layer, then you can add a romper, or long-sleeve top and trousers or leggings. Finish up with a warm coat and accessories such as mittens and little booties or socks.

Stick to natural fabrics which are breathable and will prevent your baby from overheating. Keep an eye on your little one while you’re out – if their skin feels warm, they’re starting to fuss or they’re red in the face, they might be too hot, and you’ll need to whisk a layer off.

It’s also important for you to dress well, too. Wear a coat with a hood, that you can pop up if it’s windy or starts to rain, as your hands won’t be free to hold an umbrella. And don’t forget to invest in a rain cover for your buggy.

Ace your baby bag

Nappies are a no-brainer, but there are other winter-worthy items that should be in your baby bag before you venture out.

  1. Hand sanitiser – ‘tis the season for colds, flu and covid, so carry hand sanitiser and wet wipes with you.

  2. SPF – winter isn’t all doom and gloom, on sunny, cloud-free days, you and baby can still be subjected to UV. Protect skin by packing a child-friendly sunscreen.

  3. Water – central heating and breast feeding can be dehydrating, so make sure you take a travel-friendly bottle for yourself.

  4. Baby lotion – Throw in a miniature baby lotion which will help protect their delicate skin from becoming dry, cracked and uncomfortable in winter conditions.

Pick the right time

Weekends and rush hour are best avoided, instead pick a slow time of the day to go – mid-morning means less traffic and the streets will be quieter. Feed and change baby before you leave the house, so you’re less likely to have to do either while you’re out and keep your first trip short and sweet to build your confidence up.

Overcoming hiccups

That said, even with the best of prep, you might be faced with a nappy change or need to feed. Pack multiple nappies and a portable baby change mat that you can use even in the most tricky of places.

You might be worried about breastfeeding in public, but try wearing a blouse, shirt or a cardigan that can be unbuttoned as much or as little as you need.

Bottle feeding away from home doesn’t need to be a faff either. Bring pre-made bottles with breast milk or formula and keep them warm in an insulated food bag. Or take a flask filled with warm water so you can make up baby a bottle as and when they need it.

5 first trips with baby

Your first few outings with baby might feel daunting, so build up your confidence slowly with these easy trips.

1. Friend or relative’s house

Start small with a trip to a nearby friend or relative.

2. The park

A park with paths is perfect first winter-walk territory as you’ll be able to manoeuvre your pram easily. Pick one within walking distance of your house so you can bypass the bus.

3. Asda superstore

With nappy changing facilities and a café, our stores are spot-on should you need to feed or change your little one while you’re out. You can also scan & go if you need to pick up some shopping, which means you won’t have to unload groceries onto the belt.

4. Local café

Most coffee shops are busy with newborns and mums during the week, making it a perfect place to venture to in the early days. The staff will be used to buggies and warming up milk bottles.

5. Baby groups

In those first few months, a baby group can be your best bet. Knowing you’ll be in the company of other new mums who also understand exactly what you’re going through can make things feel easier.

You don’t need to hibernate now baby is here. By prepping and planning, you can both enjoy the great outdoors, whatever weather winter throws at us.
